The Legacy of Faith: Otto Koning documentary series features multiple stories of the former missionary Otto Koning. In his relatable presentation style, Otto begins by telling about his childhood experiences during World War II, how he was saved, and how he eventually became a missionary.

Drawing from his experiences on the mission field, Otto shares vital lessons he learned such as walking in God’s will, surrendering personal rights, experiencing spiritual victory, and overcoming hostility with love. These biographical presentations include photographs from Otto’s childhood and his time as a missionary, as well as engaging reenactments of his jungle experiences.

Episode 1

The Dutch Boy Story

During the rage of World War II when Holland was blasted by air raid bombs, a little Dutch boy hid in a bomb shelter, trembling in fear. Knowing he could die at any moment, he longed to know how he could get to heaven. What he came to find began a transformation that would affect people and tribes on the other side of the world!

Episode 2

The Kidnapping Story

When Otto Koning journeyed to New Guinea as a missionary, a painful memory from his past drove him to strive for spiritual accomplishments through his own abilities. But when an unexpected band of natives emerged from the jungle and snatched him away, the frightened missionary came to learn a vital distinction: the difference between doing work for God and aligning oneself with the work of God.

Episode 3

The Pineapple Story, Part One

When missionary Otto Koning went to New Guinea, he was not prepared for the irritations he would experience. The local villagers had a cultural habit of stealing, and Otto soon realized that his possessions were disappearing! Otto describes the frustration he experienced when his “rights” were violated, and the freedom he gained when he yielded those rights to God.

The Pineapple Story, Part Two

Conflict and fruitlessness seemed to define the missionary work of Otto Koning as he struggled with the local natives stealing his pineapples! But when Otto learned to yield his rights to God, the frustrated missionary witnessed supernatural occurrences that miraculously changed the hearts of the native thieves. In Part II of The Pineapple Story, Otto bears witness to how surrendering our rights to God gives Him the opportunity to demonstrate His reality in a powerful way.

Episode 5

The Snake Story, Part One

While missionary Otto Koning served among the animists and demon worshipers of New Guinea, a time came when he faced a terrorizing confrontation on the jungle trail. The locals believed the source of this confrontation was a snake. But in the midst of the frightening situation, the missionary discovered something far more dangerous.

Episode 6

The Snake Story, Part Two

After missionary Otto Koning declared the victorious name of Jesus over the powers of darkness, he began to witness whole tribes experiencing spiritual freedom. Soon thereafter, however, Otto began to experience setbacks again, where the people could not understand the Gospel. In this conclusion to The Snake Story, Otto shares how the Lord led him back to the key that originally brought about spiritual understanding and victory.

Episode 7

The Greater Weapon Story

Among the dangers that missionary Otto Koning faced while serving in New Guinea was his terrifying interactions with a “machete happy” and “arrow happy” native duo: Sogho and Ketogho. These two men despised the missionary and his teaching, doing whatever they could to disrupt his work. But one day the tide turned unexpectedly, and Otto faced a decision between two opposing choices: to see his enemies’ demise or to extend a sacrificial act of kindness.

biography

Otto Koning was born in the Netherlands just a few years before the outbreak of World War II. After enduring the hardships of the war, he moved with his parents as immigrants to Canada. It was there that Otto received Christ as his savior, and began his preparation to become a missionary. When he finally reached the mission field, Otto encountered multiple unanticipated challenges.

Among these challenges were theft, kidnapping, death threats, and constant spiritual attack. But in each situation, God revealed a vital lesson and powerful solution to Otto. In the Legacy of Faith presentation, Otto shares many of these lessons. As you listen, you will find that the truths God revealed to this missionary are not exclusive to the mission field, but are vitally applicable for each child of God in every area of the world.
